Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has marked his 65th birthday by donating ₦10 million to a rural hospital in Anambra State, saying birthdays should be used to serve humanity rather than celebrate personal achievements.
In a message titled Reflections on My 65th Birthday, Obi said Nigeria's economic hardship, poverty, unemployment, and insecurity make it inappropriate for leaders to indulge in lavish celebrations while many citizens are struggling.
After attending a thanksgiving Mass in Onitsha, Obi visited St. Raphael's Hospital, Umueri, where he presented the ₦10 million donation to support quality healthcare. He said seeing patients reminded him that true leadership is about caring for the vulnerable and improving the lives of those who cannot repay acts of kindness.
Obi also announced plans to spend the rest of the month visiting schools and hospitals, making donations as part of his birthday celebration. According to him, hospitals preserve lives while schools shape the future, making them the most important investments any society can make.
He concluded by saying that the true measure of a person's life is not wealth or public recognition but the positive impact they make on others, praying for the strength and wisdom to continue serving Nigeria.
