Panic gripped the University of Jos (UNIJOS) community after the beheaded body of a middle-aged man was discovered on a farmland within the university environment on Tuesday morning. The victim's head was missing at the scene, leaving students, staff, and nearby residents in shock.
According to preliminary information, the deceased was not a student or staff member of the university but a farmer who regularly cultivated crops on farmland within the institution. A senior university official said the victim was well known in the area and is believed to have arrived early in the morning to work on his farm before he was attacked.
The official added that, based on the nature of the attack, the assailants appeared to have deliberately targeted the victim before fleeing with his severed head. The victim's relatives have since been contacted, while arrangements are being made to evacuate the body.
The University of Jos confirmed that its management is aware of the incident and said its Information Directorate would issue an official statement. Efforts to obtain confirmation from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful as calls to the police spokesperson went unanswered at the time of reporting.
The gruesome discovery has heightened fear within the university community, with many calling for a thorough investigation and stronger security measures to protect lives on and around the campus.
