The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has uncovered a fake university operating in the Imeke area of Olorunda Local Council Development Area in Lagos State, rescuing 107 students and arresting six suspects allegedly involved in illegal admissions, unaccredited academic programmes and a Ponzi scheme.
The illegal institution was uncovered during an operation carried out by NSCDC operatives at about 6:00 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2026. According to the Lagos State Command, the institution, whose name was withheld, was offering unauthorised courses, including Nursing, and admitting unsuspecting students into programmes that lacked accreditation before allegedly compelling them to participate in a Ponzi scheme.
The Corps Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Oluwaseun Abolurin, disclosed the development in a statement, noting that the operatives arrested six suspects between the ages of 24 and 31 in connection with the operation.
He said, “On Monday, July 20, 2026, at about 6:00 a.m., NSCDC operatives smashed a fake university located in Imeke village, Olorunda Local Council Development Area, suspected of operating illegal admissions and running unaccredited courses, including Nursing. Unfortunately, about 107 unsuspecting students were lured into joining a Ponzi scheme after obtaining admission into the institution.”
The statement added that the Lagos State Commandant of the NSCDC, Adedotun Keshinro, directed that the suspects and exhibits recovered from the institution be transferred to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Keshinro urged prospective students and their parents to verify the accreditation status of institutions before accepting admission offers, warning that fraudsters often exploit desperate admission seekers. He stressed that people should be cautious of admission offers that appear too easy or attractive, as they could be fraudulent schemes designed to extort money.
In related operations, the NSCDC arrested 12 additional suspects over alleged illegal migration, human trafficking, Ponzi schemes, cross-border crimes and vandalism, while rescuing 10 Cameroonian nationals believed to have been trafficked into Nigeria. The Command also disclosed that seven suspects, including five minors aged between 12 and 16, had been arrested and prosecuted for vandalising public school facilities in Ibereko, Badagry, warning that attacks on public infrastructure would not be tolerated.
