The growing security partnership between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger is emerging as a critical pillar in the fight against banditry and transnational crime along the countries’ shared border, with military authority in 17 Brigade Katsina, reporting improved operational outcomes through sustained collaboration.
The Commander of the 17 Brigade, Nigerian Army,, Brigadier General M.I. Ibrahim, said the strengthened cooperation between Nigerian troops and their counterparts in the Republic of Niger has significantly disrupted the activities of armed bandits and other criminal elements exploiting the porous international boundary.
Speaking while receiving a delegation of Defence Correspondents at the brigade headquarters in Katsina, Brig. Gen. Ibrahim described the bilateral military relationship as a practical demonstration of how regional cooperation can effectively address security threats that transcend national borders.
According to him, bandit groups have long exploited the vast forests and difficult terrain stretching across both countries to evade security operations, establish hideouts and launch attacks on communities.
However, he said the increasing level of intelligence sharing, coordinated patrols and operational collaboration between the two armed forces has considerably reduced the criminals’ freedom of movement.
He noted that the cooperation has not only improved surveillance along the border but has also strengthened the capacity of both countries to respond swiftly to emerging threats, making it increasingly difficult for criminal elements to use the international boundary as a safe haven.
“We have not recorded any incidents within the borders within the past six months,”he said.
The brigade commander explained that while military cooperation has yielded encouraging results, defeating banditry requires far more than kinetic.
