The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), under the leadership of Distinguished Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, has commenced a strategic engagement with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) aimed at strengthening access to justice, bail support, student welfare, and rehabilitation opportunities for Nigerian students within correctional centres across the country.
The engagement reflects NANS’ unwavering commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, and future of students, especially those who find themselves involved in legal circumstances requiring institutional support. The association emphasized that access to justice and appropriate legal processes remain essential pillars in safeguarding the academic pursuits and wellbeing of Nigerian students.
NANS highlighted the importance of bail as a critical component of the justice system, particularly for students whose educational journeys, personal development, and future opportunities may be disrupted by prolonged detention while awaiting legal determination. The association stressed that where students meet the necessary legal requirements, timely access to bail can help preserve their connection to education, family, and society while ensuring due process is respected.
During the meeting, NANS leadership and the Nigerian Correctional Service explored areas of collaboration including support mechanisms for eligible student bail applications, legal guidance.
NANS recognizes the Nigerian Correctional Service as a strategic partner in advancing justice, correction, and human development. The association reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant institutions to ensure that students are not denied opportunities for growth, learning, and a productive future.
Speaking on the development, the NANS President, Distinguished Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, stated that student welfare goes beyond the classroom, adding that every student deserves fair treatment, access to justice, and support systems that protect their future.
Education remains a foundation for national development. Where students encounter legal challenges, every lawful opportunity that protects their rights, dignity, and ability to continue their educational journey must be encouraged, he stated.
The association commended the leadership of the Nigerian Correctional Service for its openness towards collaboration and its commitment to improving correctional administration through humane and reformative approaches.
NANS remains dedicated to building strategic partnerships with government institutions, security agencies, and stakeholders to promote student safety, justice, welfare, and a more inclusive educational environment across Nigeria.
