Human rights activist and AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has alleged that many Nigerians in prison are victims of abuse of power rather than convicted criminals.
According to Sowore, influential individuals often use senior police officers to arrest citizens and file charges against them. He claimed that in many cases, suspects are denied bail or granted bail under conditions that are difficult to meet, resulting in prolonged detention while awaiting trial.
Sowore argued that the country's justice system is being manipulated to punish innocent people, while those responsible for corruption and abuse of power continue to evade accountability. He maintained that the situation has turned many prisons into holding centres for victims of injustice instead of convicted offenders.
Calling for sweeping reforms, Sowore said Nigeria needs a "revolution to end impunity" and restore fairness, accountability, and the rule of law within the country's criminal justice system.
