The Lagos State Government has officially flagged off the implementation of the Digital National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS) for the 2026 Annual School Census in all public and private primary and secondary schools across the State.
The ceremony, which took place on Thursday, 16th July 2026, at Ikeja Junior Grammar School, Bolade- Oshodi, Ikeja, marks the commencement of a new era in education data management as Lagos State transitions from the traditional manual method of conducting the Annual School Census to a fully digital system.
The initiative complies with the directive of the Minister of Education, mandating all states of the federation to adopt the National Education Management Information System for the collection and management of education data.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun described the digital census as a major milestone in strengthening education planning and governance in Lagos State.
According to the Commissioner:
"The Annual School Census remains one of the most critical exercises in the education sector because it provides the reliable data required for effective planning, policy formulation, budgeting, and equitable distribution of educational resources. The migration from a manual process to the Digital National Education Management Information System represents a significant step towards improving the quality, accuracy, credibility, and timeliness of education data in Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole."
He noted that Lagos State remains committed to supporting the Federal Government's digital transformation agenda in education and assured stakeholders that the Ministry would provide the necessary guidance and technical support to ensure a seamless implementation of the new system.
The Commissioner urged all school administrators, proprietors of private schools, head teachers, principals, and education officers to cooperate fully with census officials by providing accurate, complete, and timely information through the digital platform.
Also, speaking at the event, the Chairman for the Lagos State Coordinating Unit, Mr. Bashir Temitayo Oseni-Ope, the acting Statistician-General, described the introduction of the Digital NEMIS as a strategic intervention that will improve data integrity and enhance evidence-based decision-making across the education sector.
He emphasised that reliable education data is essential to effective policy implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, as this will leave no student behind, adding that the success of the digital census depends on the active participation and commitment of every school in the State.
The Annual School Census serves as the official source of education statistics in Nigeria, capturing critical information on school enrolment, teaching and non-teaching personnel, infrastructure, learning facilities, and other key indicators required for National and State education planning.
The deployment of the Digital National Education Management Information System is expected to significantly reduce errors associated with manual data collection, improve data validation and analysis, eliminate duplication, enhance transparency, and ensure the availability of real-time information for strategic planning and improved service delivery.
As one of Nigeria's leading education centres, Lagos State remains steadfast in its commitment to embracing innovation and digital solutions that will strengthen the education system and improve learning outcomes for every child.
The Ministry therefore calls on all public and private primary and secondary schools to actively participate in the 2026 Annual School Census and ensure full compliance with the Digital National Education Management Information System, in line with the Federal Government's directive.
