Prominent Indian activist and environmental campaigner Sonam Wangchuk has been taken to hospital after spending more than 20 days on a hunger strike in New Delhi, as concerns mounted over his deteriorating health. Authorities said the decision was taken following medical advice and a court directive aimed at protecting his wellbeing.
Wangchuk, 59, began the hunger strike on June 28 in support of demands for education reforms and the resignation of India’s Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, following controversy surrounding examination paper leaks that affected millions of students. His protest attracted nationwide attention and generated widespread support on social media.
According to police and hospital officials, Wangchuk’s health weakened significantly after nearly three weeks without food. Doctors have reported that he remains stable but requires continuous medical monitoring due to dehydration and the physical effects of prolonged fasting.
