A 28-year-old woman has recounted how her menstrual period may have saved her from being raped during a robbery attack along the Aawe–Iwo Road in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Speaking with Saturday Tribune, she said she, her husband, and a 20-year-old apprentice were returning from the market when armed men blocked the road, forced their vehicle to stop, and attacked them.
She said the assailants snatched their bag containing cash and valuables, then chased her into the bush. She alleged that they tried to sexually assault her but stopped after discovering she was menstruating.
"They started dragging me deeper into the bush. They attempted to have sexual intercourse with me, but I was menstruating," she said.
The suspects beat her with a herding stick and tore her leggings, she added. They eventually let her go after one of them was ordered to lead her out of the bush.
"When they discovered I was menstruating, one of them was instructed to lead me out. He abandoned me after walking some distance, and I later emerged by the roadside where I saw hunters and vigilantes approaching."
She was later reunited with others after the hunters and vigilantes searched the area. She also learned that some of the suspects had been arrested.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the arrest of four suspects in connection with the robbery. Police said the victims identified them during a parade, and investigations are ongoing.
