OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso – Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have officially launched a joint bid to host the 2032 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), in what would mark the first major sporting initiative under the Alliance of Sahel States.
The proposed joint hosting arrangement is being presented as a symbol of regional unity and cooperation among the three Sahel nations, which have strengthened their political and economic ties through the Alliance of Sahel States.
The bid could provide the countries with an opportunity to showcase their sporting infrastructure, promote regional integration and attract international attention to the Sahel region.
However, security concerns remain a major hurdle. The three countries continue to face significant threats from armed groups and terrorism, raising questions about their ability to guarantee the safety of players, officials, supporters and international visitors during the tournament.
If successful, the joint bid would represent a landmark moment for the Alliance of Sahel States and could demonstrate the bloc's ambition to deepen cooperation beyond politics and security into sports and regional development.
