The Edo State Government has suspended the reopening of schools in Edo Central Senatorial District indefinitely, following a weekend of chaos that has left the community reeling.
Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, said the postponement would give authorities time to address pressing issues affecting pupils’ welfare. “The new date of resumption will be communicated in due course,” he added, urging parents and guardians to take note.
The decision comes after a protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, turned violent, plunging the town into panic. Residents had taken to the streets to demand action against rising insecurity, including kidnappings and the killing of a local youth. But the peaceful demonstration was hijacked by hoodlums, who attacked Hausa traders at the livestock market, slaughtered goats, beat cows, and caused chaos.
The palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma, Zaiki Anthony Abumere II, was also vandalised, prompting strong condemnation from Governor Okpebholo. The state police confirmed that a soldier shot one person during the unrest, with the matter now referred to military authorities.
What began as a community outcry over insecurity has spiraled into destruction and fear, forcing schools to remain closed and leaving residents anxious about the situation’s escalation.
