Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has rejected claims by former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose that the ADC cannot stand a chance to win the 2027 presidential election without selecting Peter Obi as its candidate.
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV, Tambuwal maintained his position of not engaging in public disputes with Fayose while firmly disagreeing with his assessment. "I don't join issues with Ayodele Fayose. I said so before.
I still stand on what I've said. And I don't agree with that thought. I believe that the leadership of the ADC from the very foundation, from what we've been discussing and from day one, we agree that we must have very clear transparent primary elections and if we have it, whoever emerges, all of us in the coalition will support that candidate, either Peter Obi or even anyone," he said.
The former governor declined to reveal his preferred candidate for the ADC presidential ticket, citing his prominent role in the coalition as a reason for maintaining neutrality at this stage.
I have been playing a major role in the coalition. So, it will be too insensitive for me to come out right now and say I'm supporting this person or that person," Tambuwal stated.
Regarding the contentious issue of zoning, he acknowledged its complexity and multiple interpretations depending on one's perspective.
Tambuwal noted that calculating presidential tenure since 1999—when zoning formally began—reveals that the South has held power for longer periods.
According to the former governor, advocates for northern candidacy argue that this imbalance justifies their region's claim to the presidency.
