The Rivers State House of Assembly has rejected a court order asking it to stop the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.
Earlier on Friday, a Rivers State High Court gave an interim order stopping the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, and the Clerk from sending any impeachment notice to the state Chief Judge. The court also restrained the Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, from taking any step related to the impeachment.
Reacting to the order, the Assembly’s spokesman, Enemi George, said the lawmakers are not aware of any such court directive.
He insisted that the court has no right to interfere in the impeachment process.
According to him, Section 188(10) of the Nigerian Constitution clearly states that courts cannot intervene in the impeachment of a sitting governor.
“The House is not aware of any court order. But the constitution is clear. The court has no power to intervene in impeachment matters,” he said.
The development adds to the growing political tension in Rivers State as the impeachment process continues to spark strong reactions.
