Rivers Assembly Says Plot Uncovered to Block Fubara’sImpeachment With Court Order

The Rivers State House of Assembly has accused unnamed individuals of trying to obtain an illegal court order to halt impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu. Lawmakers say credible information shows attempts to secure an ex parte order from high courts outside the Port Harcourt judicial division, a move they call unconstitutional and aimed at stopping the legislature from doing its job.

In a statement on Sunday, the chairman of the House Committee on Information, Dr. Enemi George, warned that such actions could amount to subverting the 1999 Constitution and undermine democratic processes. He referenced constitutional provisions that restrict court involvement in impeachment matters and recent appellate rulings that struck down similar orders.

George urged those behind the alleged plot to respect the rule of law and allow the impeachment process: already underway, to proceed, noting that Fubara and Odu have been formally served with allegations of gross misconduct. The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional duties and warned against attempts to distract or intimidate lawmakers.
