Fresh signs emerged on Monday suggesting that the impeachment move against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, may fizzle out amid quiet negotiations and a reported intervention by President Bola Tinubu.
Last Thursday, 26 lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Rivers State House of Assembly—said to be loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike—set impeachment proceedings in motion against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct.
However, a prominent Niger Delta elder and Ijaw leader told Vanguard that there was growing hope the political standoff would soon be resolved. According to him, ongoing behind-the-scenes efforts are aimed at preventing the crisis from spiralling out of control.
“There is light at the end of the tunnel for the governor,” the elder said. “Light always prevails over darkness, and right over impunity.”
While declining to disclose details, he stressed that key stakeholders were actively working to defuse the tension. “A lot is happening in the background that I cannot reveal,” he added. “But I am confident that this impeachment process will not go anywhere. By God’s grace, everything will be settled.”
Tinubu reportedly steps in
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicate that President Bola Tinubu, who is also the national leader of the APC, has directed the Rivers State House of Assembly to immediately halt all impeachment actions against the governor and his deputy.
According to Vanguard, the President also asked the lawmakers to consult the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, for further guidance. Tinubu was further said to have cautioned the legislators against any moves that could deepen divisions or further polarise the state.
