Honourable Solomon Eke has publicly expressed regret over his past support for Martins Amaewhule amid growing political tension in Rivers State. He spoke during an interview on News Central TV, reacting to the impeachment move initiated by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Nyesom Wike against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy over allegations of gross misconduct.
Eke said he was disappointed that Amaewhule, whom he once encouraged his supporters to vote for, had failed to act independently. According to him, the lawmaker now answers more to a powerful individual than to the people who elected him. He stressed that an elected representative is expected to think for himself and defend the collective will of his constituents, rather than the interests of political benefactors.
He reminded Amaewhule that his primary responsibility at the Rivers State House of Assembly is to represent the wishes of the people who voted him into office. Eke warned that acting against the people’s interest carries consequences and could damage a political career permanently.
The grassroots politician further stated that Amaewhule has lost the trust of the community he represents. He claimed that if elections were held today, Amaewhule would struggle to win in his own area due to growing dissatisfaction among voters. Eke attributed this to what he described as a betrayal of public trust.
In his words, “I regret convincing my supporters to vote for Martins Amaewhule. He’s a man who doesn’t have his own mindset; he believes in his oga.”
