Singer Sola Allyson Reveals How Childhood Experiences Led to Her Conversion From Islam to Christianity
Nigerian soul and folk singer Sola Allyson has opened up about the deeply personal journey that led her to transition from Islam to Christianity— a decision shaped by family separation, religious immersion, and years of personal discovery.
Born Rasheedat into a Muslim family, Allyson said in a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV that she spent her early childhood living with her maternal grandmother in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, where she fully practised Islam.
Her life, however, took a different turn when she later moved to Ikorodu, Lagos, to live with her paternal grandparents. There, she reconnected with an old friend who eventually introduced her to Christianity.
Allyson noted that she has never hidden her Islamic background and even cherishes the meaning of her birth name.
“I was born a Muslim. My father was a Muslim. I was named Rasheedat. I researched the name since I was young, and the meaning— ‘someone who is wise’ —makes me happy,” she said.
She explained how constantly changing environments exposed her to different belief systems.
According to her, she lived with Muslims in Ijebu-Ode, where observing the five daily prayers was mandatory. Later, while living among Christians in Ikorodu, she naturally blended into their religious practices.
Her curiosity also pushed her to explore beyond the two dominant religions.
“I read a lot. I have studied Buddhism. I read grey literature. I lived among both Christians and Muslims where my parents were not present.”
Sola Allyson emphasized that her spiritual journey has always been centred on seeking a deeper understanding of God, rather than conforming strictly to a particular religion.
“To me, knowing the will of God is better than practising a certain religion. If I am with anyone practising any other religion, we would naturally flow,” she added.
