Rufai Oseni Condemns Bishop Kukah’s Remarks on Genocide, Cites Deborah’s Killing
Arise TV presenter Rufai Oseni has publicly condemned Bishop Matthew Kukah’s recent viral remarks denying an ongoing genocide or persecution of Christians in Nigeria, calling the comments insensitive.
Bishop Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, had argued that claims of persecution are exaggerated, stressing that genocide is determined by intent, not the number of casualties, and notably stated that “you can kill 10 million people and it will not be genocide.”
Oseni took to social media to criticize the Bishop’s controversial assertion, highlighting specific incidents of violence against Christians, including those in the Bishop’s former and current jurisdictions.
Oseni wrote, directly addressing Kukah’s comment:
“I heard a man of the cloth say you can kill 10m and it will not be genocide.
Ask that man of God, wasn’t it in his state that Deborah was killed?
Ask that man of God what happened to “Thou shalt not kill.”
Ask that man of God what happened to Ven Achi just because he was a clergyman.”
He concluded by invoking Pastor Martin Niemöller’s famous quote about inaction:
“Remind the man of God about Pastor Martin Niemöller’s quote: First they came for the Communists. And I did not speak out. Because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the Socialists. And I did not speak out. Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists. And I did not speak out. Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews. And I did not speak out. Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me. And there was no one left To speak out for me.”
