Plateau State has recorded 1,910 new HIV cases between January and September 2025 after screening 98,403 residents, according to Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong.
He revealed that 1,859 of those diagnosed are already receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) across health facilities statewide.
As part of efforts to strengthen the response, Governor Caleb Mutfwang recently approved funds for the procurement of HIV dual test kits — now distributed to health centers to boost testing access.

• 47,056 people currently on ART
• 30,743 pregnant women tested
• 39 HIV-positive expectant mothers linked to immediate treatment
• 1,835 children on ART (882 boys, 953 girls)
Despite progress, Dr. Ba’amlong stressed that HIV remains a major public health concern in Plateau. In 2024, the state recorded 2,786 infections and 460 HIV-related deaths.
He also announced a major policy shift — the age of consent for HIV testing has been lowered to 14 years, aimed at improving early detection among adolescents.
Stakeholders, including the Plateau State AIDS Control Agency (PLACA), faith leaders and community groups, are calling for intensified awareness, stronger support for those living with HIV, and an end to stigma.
