Nigeria has finalized a landmark agreement to acquire 24 M-346FA light combat jets from Italian defense giant Leonardo S.p.A., in a deal valued at approximately €1.2 billion.
This procurement marks the largest single military aircraft acquisition in West African history and represents a major step in modernizing the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
The contract, initially signed in November 2023, includes comprehensive long-term maintenance and logistical support.
The M-346FA is a versatile multi-role aircraft, capable of advanced pilot training, close air support, air interdiction, tactical reconnaissance, and precision strikes.
Production of the jets is underway in Italy, with the first three aircraft expected to be delivered in early 2025. Deliveries will continue progressively, with the full fleet arriving by mid-2026.
This acquisition enhances the NAF's capabilities amid ongoing security challenges, including insurgency and regional threats.
The jets will complement existing platforms and serve as lead-in trainers for more advanced fighters in the fleet.
The deal strengthens defense ties between Nigeria and Italy, with provisions for potential regional maintenance hubs to support the new aircraft.
