A shocking revelation from Denmark has sparked global concern after it emerged that an anonymous sperm donor — known by the alias “Kjeld” — fathered nearly 200 children worldwide while being an asymptomatic carrier of a genetic mutation that increases cancer risk.
According to Denmark’s public broadcaster DR, the donor’s sperm was distributed between 2006 and 2022 to 67 clinics across 14 countries.
In Denmark alone, 99 children were conceived using his donations.
DR reported that:
“At least 197 children were born thanks to the sperm of an anonymous Danish donor using the alias Kjeld before the sperm bank discovered a serious genetic abnormality.”
The discovery has raised urgent questions about global sperm-donor screening standards, cross-border fertility regulation, and the responsibilities of international sperm banks.
