A 35-year-old woman from Maine, Lauren Harkins, has sparked conversations online after openly revealing that she has never had s+x and has never been on a date — and she’s completely unbothered by the backlash.
Sharing her story on social media, Harkins said she has often faced ridicule and judgment for her virginity, but insists she has never felt ashamed of her choices. According to her, intimacy has always been something deeply meaningful, not an experience to rush into just to meet societal expectations.
“I’ve always been open about being a virgin, even as a teenager. It was never something I felt pressured to ‘fix,’” she explained.
Despite comments claiming she “doesn’t act like a virgin,” Harkins says the criticism stems from outdated stereotypes that equate virginity with being shy, awkward, or socially withdrawn. She revealed that online trolls have labeled her “expired,” attention-seeking, or dishonest — remarks she says no longer affect her.
Importantly, Harkins clarified that she is not saving herself for marriage or acting out of religious beliefs. Instead, she says she values a committed, aligned, long-term partnership, positioning herself between strict traditionalism and today’s casual ho%kup culture.
Now in her mid-30s, Harkins says she’s only just begun considering romance — on her own timeline.
“I wasn’t ready in my teens or twenties. Approaching this now is intentional, and there’s nothing embarrassing about it,” she said.
Her story has since reignited debates around choice, autonomy, and society’s obsession with people’s private lives.
