A Teacher employed by the Ekiti State government, Afolayan Joshua Adebayo, has alleged that medical staff at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital removed one of his kidneys without consent.
At a press conference in Ado Ekiti, Afolayan recounted that he suffered an accident in August 2025, after which he was informed by hospital staff that one of his kidneys had been damaged.
He stated that multiple scans, including those from UCH in Ibadan, Oyo State, confirmed that his right kidney was impaired, while his left kidney was functioning well.
However, Afolayan claimed that despite urinating just five minutes before his surgery to remove the damaged kidney, he has been unable to urinate since the procedure in October.
He expressed frustration over the hospital's lack of transparency, as his attempts to seek clarification were met with evasiveness.
Upon seeking a second opinion at another facility, he discovered that he had been living without a kidney since the operation. He urged the government to investigate the matter thoroughly, as he continues to suffer from pain.
In response, Professor Kayode Olabanji, the Chief Medical Director of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, refuted the allegations, asserting that the hospital prioritizes patient care and would never engage in unethical practices.
He explained that Afolayan had a structural issue with his kidneys that necessitated surgery to prevent further damage. During the operation, it was revealed that both kidneys were adhered to each other.
Professor Olabanji emphasized that the consultant who managed Afolayan's case is highly qualified and that the hospital does not perform organ transplants, rendering the claims of organ trafficking unfounded.
He expressed sympathy for Afolayan's situation and pledged to provide him with free dialysis until he can find a donor for a transplant.
