The Federal Ministry of Education has moved to dispel confusion surrounding subject selection in the updated Senior Secondary School Curriculum, following a surge of enquiries from parents, students and school operators nationwide.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Folasade Boriowo, said the intervention became necessary as misleading interpretations of the curriculum changes continued to spread across various public platforms.
She noted that the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, had clarified that no subject has been restricted or removed from student options. All approved subjects, he said, remain open for selection, provided students make informed choices under the guidance of their schools, parents, or certified counsellors.
Alausa explained that the revised curriculum was deliberately built to promote flexibility and support students’ diverse academic strengths and future career plans. He stressed that science students are free to pick subjects from the arts or social sciences, and vice-versa.
Addressing widespread queries about the subject formerly known as Information and Communication Technology, the minister confirmed that the course has simply been renamed Digital Technology. The change, he stated, is strictly nominal and has not affected the curriculum content.
“Students who previously studied ICT can seamlessly register for Digital Technology in all examinations,” Alausa assured.
