Meet Gigantura indica, or the telescope fish.
Found at depths of 1,600 to 6,600 feet, this elusive deep-sea dweller uses tubular, forward-facing eyes that function like optical telescopes, enabling it to detect even the faintest glimmers of bioluminescence from prey above. Its sleek, scaleless body is covered in reflective guanine, aiding camouflage in the dim depths.
Stretching about 10 inches long, it sports a dramatic tail fin that can extend longer than its body—a feature as mysterious as the creature itself.
But the telescope fish’s most fearsome adaptation lies in its jaw: a highly extendable mouth capable of unhinging to devour prey nearly its own size.
Lanternfish and bristlemouths are likely on the menu. Rarely seen alive, most specimens are studied after being collected by deep-sea trawls, leaving much of their behavior to scientific deduction.
Intriguingly, G. indica is believed to be a synchronous hermaphrodite, producing both eggs and sperm—an evolutionary edge when potential mates are scarce in the vast deep. In the near-total blackness of the ocean’s depths, the telescope fish is a marvel of evolutionary design, built for stealth, surprise, and survival.
