Benin Republic: Former President’s Son Arrested After Failed Coup Plot

Authorities in Benin Republic have arrested Chabi Yayi, the son of former president and opposition leader Thomas Boni Yayi.

Chabi Yayi was picked up early Sunday morning at his home. His arrest came one week after a failed coup attempt in the country. As at the time of this report, officials have not given any clear reason for his arrest.

A member of the Democrats Party, which is led by Boni Yayi, said it is still unclear whether the arrest is connected to the attempted coup.

Meanwhile, former president Thomas Boni Yayi has publicly spoken against the failed takeover, condemning it in a video message released days after the incident.

Since the attempted coup on December 7, several people have been arrested. Those detained include suspected plotters, a former defence minister, and top opposition figure Candide Azannai. Azannai is being held for alleged actions against the authority of the state.

The Benin government has also issued an international arrest warrant for activist Kemi Seba. Responding in a video, Seba said he had taken safety steps but did not reveal his current location.
