Australian police have confirmed that a father and son were responsible for a d+adly sh%%ting at a Jewish celebration in Sydney’s Bondi Beach, which claimed 15 lives. The father, aged 50, was k+lled at the scene, bringing the d+ath toll to 16, while the 24-year-old son remains in critical condition in hospital.
The men were identified by local media, including ABC, as Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram. Authorities have described Sunday’s attack as a targeted antisemitic act.
Forty people remain hospitalized, including two police officers in serious but stable condition. Victims’ ages ranged from 10 to 87 years old.
The attack occurred at a Hanukkah event attended by around 1,000 people in a small park off Bondi Beach. Witnesses reported that the shooting lasted roughly 10 minutes, causing panic and sending crowds fleeing across the sand and into nearby streets.
A bystander, Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, who tackled and disarmed one of the g+nmen, has been hailed as a hero. He was reportedly shot twice and underwent surgery. A fundraising campaign for him has raised over A$350,000 (US$233,000).
Police revealed that the father held a f+rearms license since 2015 and legally owned six g+ns. Home Minister Tony Burke stated that the father arrived in Australia on a student visa in 1998, while the son is an Australian-born citizen. Videos from the scene suggest the att@ckers used a bolt-action rifle and a shotgun, though authorities have not released detailed information about the weapons.
