I am truly honored and overjoyed to stand before you as your valedictorian.
As I stand on this podium, I am reminded of the words: “If it had not been for the Lord on our side…” We are here today because He has been with us every step of the way. I want to begin by expressing heartfelt gratitude to God for the gift of life and for making this day a memorable one for us all.
The journey we began years ago within these walls finds its beautiful conclusion today. Our time in this institution has been one of self-discovery, growth, and quiet strength. In the earliest days, we carried drawing boards across lecture halls. Our final year brought the ultimate challenge—our final year projects. That experience demanded resilience, adaptability, and, for many of us, spiritual reawakening. If you weren’t a prayer warrior before, that project surely made you one.
Dear classmates, our time here has been a roller-coaster of highs and lows. We have bonded with friends who became family, we’ve laughed, and we’ve cried. There were days when the pressure felt unbearable, and we thought of giving up, but with each challenge, we learned, we changed, and we matured. We discovered the resilience we didn’t know we had. Today, we stand here because we refused to give up. Take a moment to celebrate yourself. You deserve it.
This institution stands Is one of the top universities in West Africa. FUTA has taught us the value of integrity, creativity, accountability, rational thinking, and a commitment to excellence. As we step into the dynamic world beyond these walls, let these values be our compass.
Thomas Edison once said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” Opportunities will always present themselves, but only those willing to step forward, to take action, and to show initiative will seize them. The world does not reward those who wait; it rewards those who act.
Let us go forth with pro-activity. We are the realization of our parents’ dreams. Let us make them proud, achieve greatness, and above all, never forget our identity. FUTA has been a blessing in our lives, and now it is our turn to inspire those who will follow.
To the undergraduates, my advice is simple: identify your purpose early. Build systems that work for you. Strive for success in everything you do. Build meaningful connections, and above all, put your faith in God.
Before I conclude, I must express my heartfelt appreciation to my parents, Pastor and Mrs. Akindunbi, for being the foundation upon which my civil engineering degree is built. I also thank Mrs. Akinde and my siblings for their unwavering financial and emotional support.
To my outstanding lecturers, who have been more than teachers—truly mentors—I say thank you. Special appreciation goes to my supervisor, Dr. S. L. Akingbonmire, the HOD, Professor O. J. Oyedepo, and all staff of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
I cannot leave out my amazing departmental mates, CVE Class of 2024. You all are incredible—thank you for your love and support.
I also extend heartfelt gratitude to the chancellor, the vice-chancellor, and the entire FUTA community—the academic, administrative, technical, and professional staff—for making FUTA a center of academic excellence.
On behalf of the graduating students, I also say a huge thank you to our parents. No words can fully express your support, sacrifices, and love. We pray that you will reap the fruit of your labor.
Finally, as we leave today, let us remember: the future is not waiting somewhere ahead; it is being shaped by the choices we make every day. Let us go forth and create with purpose.
