A regulatory body responsible for ensuring standards in medical and dental education and practice in Nigeria, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has officially recognised and approved the Federal Medical Centre, Ikole-Ekiti, Ekiti State, for housemanship training.
The accreditation, would enable the healthcare facility to attract top medical talents, provide housemanship training to medical graduates in order to gain practical experience in their field.
The Hospital was accredited based on its state-of-the-art facilities, equipment and technology, adequate patient load to provide diverse learning experiences, structured training programs that align with MDCN’s guidelines, training capacity, conducive training environment, adequate supervision and mentorship by experienced medical professionals, effective record keeping and evaluation systems to monitor, among others.
After scrutinising the facilities in the Hospital for about two hours, the 7-man MDCN team led by its Deputy Registrar, Dr Nnaemeka Nwakanma applauded the rapid transformation of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ikole-Ekiti, while urging its management and consultants to uphold high standards as the facility advances its drive to become a full-fledged training institution.
Dr Nwakanma described FMC Ikole-Ekiti as a model of pioneering excellence, noting that the hospital had already attracted an impressive array of specialists despite its recent upgrade from secondary to tertiary status.
The Deputy Registrar commended the Medical Director, Professor Johnson Dare Ogunlusi, consultants and the management team for their dedication, saying the progress recorded within such a short period reflects strong leadership and unity of purpose.
He praised the hospital for becoming a magnet for super-specialists across Ekiti and neighbouring states, encouraging the management to sustain its strategies to keep attracting medical experts.
He also stressed the need to maintain global standards in medical education, noting that Nigeria’s medical training system currently enjoys considerable international recognition.
Nwakanma further urged consultants to treat house officers with dignity, warning against toxic work cultures that lead to burnout among junior doctors.
He added, “There are not many hospitals at this level of operation that maintain the level of cleanliness I have seen at FMC Ikole-Ekiti.
“ This shows that the Hospital has a culture of maintaining a clean and serene environment. It doesn’t make sense that patients come to hospital and they go home with nosocomial infections coming from poor hygiene in the hospital.
“But we have seen that you have made good effort and it didn’t look like it’s something you did today. It obvious it looks like this all the time and it’s something that we commend quite much.
“So, my team has just told me to inform you that the Federal Medical Center Ikole-Ekiti has now been accredited as a Housemanship Training Center”.
In his response, the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ikole-Ekiti, Professor Johnson Dare Ogunlusi expressed deep appreciation for the support the centre has received, noting that most of its ongoing projects are financed through internally generated revenue (IGR), reaffirming the hospital’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare.
Ogunlusi emphasised that staff welfare and patient-centred service delivery remain top priorities for the hospital, stressing that the FMC, Ikole-Ekiti maintains strict standards of cleanliness and professionalism, ensuring that patients are treated with respect and dignity.
He promised that the Hospital would continue to uphold the highest standard of professionalism in delivering quality healthcare for the betterment of mankind.
Recall that the FMC Ikole-Ekiti was established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Ekiti State Government in July 2024; and was upgraded from a state specialist hospital to a Federal Medical Centre.
The Healthcare centre offers services such as Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Emergency Care, Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, Endocrinology, Opthalmology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Joint replacement, Gastroenterology, Dental services among others.
