The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security advisory to its citizens ahead of the planned FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest set for Monday in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The protest, announced by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore on X (formerly Twitter) on October 9, is expected to draw crowds to Eagle Square and the Central Business District.
Sowore described the demonstration as “historic” and peaceful, aimed at securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Kanu has been in custody since June 2021 following his extradition from Kenya and is currently facing terrorism charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
In a statement published on its website, the US Embassy warned that the protest could lead to traffic disruptions, roadblocks, and potential confrontations between police and protesters.
Citizens are advised to avoid the protest areas and limit movement across the city on Monday, October 20.
“Avoid areas where protests are taking place. Avoid crowds. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests,” the Embassy stated.”
The advisory also recommended that children stay home from school and domestic staff who commute from outside Abuja refrain from coming to work.
Americans in Nigeria are urged to exercise heightened caution, avoid crowds, and remain vigilant in public spaces such as shopping centers, movie theaters, and places of worship.
The Embassy also encouraged monitoring local news, keeping a low profile, and taking all necessary precautions to ensure safety during the demonstrations.
