Professor Joash Amupitan confirmed by the Nigeria senate as New INEC Chairman

The Senate has officially confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

His confirmation came on Thursday following a screening session conducted by the Senate Committee of the Whole in the chamber.

During the exercise, lawmakers asked several questions, which Amupitan responded to before being allowed to take a bow and leave the chamber. He departed with a promise that the Senate’s decision would be communicated to him.

After his exit, the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, moved a motion to restore all floor privileges earlier suspended during the screening. The motion, seconded by the Minority Leader, was adopted through a voice vote.

Subsequently, Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the nomination to another voice vote, after which it was unanimously approved.

The nomination of Joash Ojo Amupitan for appointment as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission is hereby confirmed,” Akpabio declared.
