Aminu Tambuwal, a past governor of Sokoto State, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are undermining the opposition.
Speaking on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television's Politics Today, Tambuwal alleged that the APC and Tinubu have deliberately orchestrated the downfall of opposition parties in the country.
Tambuwal remarked on the current affairs show that observing the activities within various political parties in Nigeria today reveals all you need to know. Despite any denials from figures like President Bola Tinubu, it is evident they are involved in efforts to destabilize opposition parties; claiming otherwise would be incorrect.
"I'm not accusing them," he clarified. "I'm asserting that they are engaged in efforts to destabilize opposition parties."
When questioned about evidence to support his allegation, Tambuwal asserted confidently, "I am stating this outrightly; I have no doubts. They are involved in all of this," the former Speaker of the House of Representatives remarked to host Seun Okinbaloye.
In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu won against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), along with other candidates.
Although these parties have produced governors and members of the National and state assemblies, most opposition political leaders have defected to the APC, sparking concerns about the country's democracy.
In recent months, governors from the PDP and lawmakers from the LP, among others, have switched their allegiance to the APC. Additionally, some of these parties are experiencing internal conflicts—an issue that Tambuwal has accused the ruling party of instigating.
In an effort to counter the APC, some discontented members of the ruling party along with individuals from PDP, LP, and others have come together to form a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The ADC includes notable figures such as Atiku, Obi; former Osun governor Rauf Aregbesola; ex-Senate President David Mark; and Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers State, among others.
Nonetheless, the APC has rejected their attempts, with President Tinubu referring to the opposition as a "sinking ship."
"It's a good idea to leave the sinking ship and distance oneself from a coalition of confusion," Tinubu stated at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the APC in Abuja. This gathering, held in July, saw former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Nentawe Yilwatda, elected as national chairman of the party.
