Retired Army General Earns PhD in Mathematics at 72

Retired Major General Ola Orisamolade has achieved a significant academic milestone by earning a PhD in Mathematics at the age of 72. 

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin, Kwara State, Orisamolade attributed his accomplishment to a lifelong passion for mathematics that began in his early education. “My love for mathematics started right from primary school,” he shared. 

“After completing secondary school, I studied Mathematics at the University of Lagos. I joined the Nigerian Army in 1975 and rose through the ranks to become a General before retiring in 2010.” 

Driven by a deep commitment to learning, Orisamolade pursued a Master’s degree in Mathematics at the University of Lagos, which he completed in 2017. 

Determined to go even further, he enrolled in a PhD programme at the University of Ilorin. He has now successfully defended his doctoral thesis in Mathematics. Reflecting on his journey, he said, “The passion I have for mathematics motivated me to keep learning. Today, I’ve fulfilled my dream.” 

A native of Ondo Town in Ondo State, Dr. Orisamolade’s academic pursuit has been widely praised within the University of Ilorin. 

The Dean of the Postgraduate School, Professor Bamidele Owoyele, described the achievement as a strong testament to the university’s commitment to inclusive academic excellence. His thesis supervisor, Professor Kamilu Rauf, applauded the retired General’s discipline and perseverance. 

“Dr. Orisamolade’s story is a powerful reminder that age should never be a barrier to education. Despite facing personal challenges, including the loss of his wife, he stayed focused and completed his studies,” Rauf said. 

The University of Ilorin has produced more than 15,000 PhD graduates over the past 15 years, according to NAN. Dr. Orisamolade’s story stands as a beacon of inspiration, proving that the pursuit of knowledge knows no age limit.
