A confirmed outbreak of rabies has been reported in the Ajah area of Lagos State, according to the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA). The confirmation came on August 2, 2025, after laboratory tests conducted by the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) validated the presence of the virus in the area.
Dr. Ofua Mark, NVMA Chairman in Lagos, linked the outbreak to unlicensed individuals posing as veterinarians and mishandling vaccine administration. He emphasized that such practices are contributing to the spread of rabies and warned residents to ensure their pets are vaccinated by certified professionals only.
The Lagos State government has commenced containment measures including contact tracing, isolation of suspected cases, and intensified surveillance across the Ajah-Lekki axis. Residents are advised to avoid contact with stray animals and seek immediate medical attention in the event of a bite.
