Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has initiated what his Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, described as "a vigorous legal action" against Reno Omokri, a fervent supporter of President Bola Tinubu.
Kanu took legal action against Omokri in the Enugu High Court, accusing him of making defamatory statements about himself and IPOB.
In a summons, the IPOB leader sought N60 billion in compensation from Omokri for alleged defamatory statements.
The beleaguered separatist also requested that the court mandate the former presidential aide to issue apologies in national newspapers for his "deeply defamatory and prejudicial publications" against him.
The summons document states in part: "General damages amounting to N50,000,000,000.00 (Fifty Billion Naira) are sought for defamation, encompassing harm to reputation, emotional distress and detrimental impact on ongoing legal proceedings."
Aggravated damages amounting to N10,000,000,000.00 (Ten Billion Naira) for the Defendant's malicious and reckless publication of false statements.
A directive requiring the Defendant to issue a complete retraction of the defamatory statements in two national newspapers and on their Twitter/X account within seven days following the court's ruling.
An order requiring the Defendant to issue a public apology to the Plaintiff in two national newspapers as well as on their Twitter/X account.

An ongoing injunction preventing the Defendant, along with their agents, associates, or successors, from continuing to publish or distribute such material.

"Interest on all monetary awards will accrue at a rate of 10% per annum, starting from the date of judgment until full payment is made."
Ejimakor shared on X about the legal proceedings, stating: "Mazi Nnamdi Kanu initiated a strong legal case against RENO OMOKRI (@renoomokri) yesterday. The action seeks a retraction, apology, and damages for Omokri's highly defamatory and prejudicial statements regarding Mazi Kanu, IPOB & #Ndigbo. Others who are similar to Omokri should take notice and be cautious."
