The Ebonyi State Government has begun the process of paying gratuities to retired local government employees dating back to 1996.
To facilitate this, Governor Francis Nwifuru has inaugurated a six-member committee led by Mrs. Catherine Ogbu, tasked with verifying and disbursing payments to legitimate retirees. Other members include Mrs. Mbam Joy, Dr. Cajethan Oketa, Hon. Justice Iheanachor Chima, and Comrade David Elom, representing the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT). Mr. Martins Uguru will serve as the committee’s secretary.
Governor Nwifuru urged the committee to carry out their duties with integrity and fairness, expressing confidence in their abilities. He emphasized that the government is prioritizing the payment of entitlements despite financial constraints, stating that it is as crucial as infrastructural development.
The governor’s remarks were contained in a statement released on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, and made available to journalists in Abakaliki. He also directed the committee to ensure retirees receive payment alerts on the same day they are verified, using available documents as a guide. He appreciated the Local Government Chairmen for their support in the initiative.
