Dele Momodu, a former presidential candidate and prominent member of the opposition coalition, has revealed that ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar had an agreement to succeed former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Momodu revealed that Atiku was supposed to succeed Obasanjo following his first term in office.
He noted, however, that the deal collapsed and Obasanjo revoked all of Atiku's constitutional privileges at that time.
He observed that Atiku had received tremendous support from former governors for the deal to come together.
The ex-leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) revealed this information in an article he shared on his Facebook page.
Atiku served as Obasanjo's Vice President from 1999 to 2007. After his time in office, he made multiple attempts to become president but was unsuccessful.
In the 2023 presidential election, the former Vice President finished in second place after President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The post partially states: "The agreement was that he would assume leadership after their initial term in office, but it didn't happen despite substantial backing from the majority of the governors.
He continued to respect his boss and eased the tension during his second term, even when he was practically stripped of his Constitutional duties and rights. He accepted this situation with remarkable calmness.
Since then, he has been involved in well-managed and productive businesses, unlike many of his contemporaries who struggle to survive outside the realms of power and politics.
He is a man with the Midas touch, deeply involved in numerous successful ventures. Nigeria would be far better off if more of our leaders were as productively engaged as he is.
