Prof. Jerry Gana, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), remarked that while Peter Obi may be competent, the PDP has someone even better.
He, on the other hand, asserted that if the former Governor of Anambra State were to rejoin the main opposition party, he would secure victory in the northern state.
Recent reports indicate that Gana has renewed his appeal for Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in 2023, to return to the PDP.
He believes the former Governor has a stronger opportunity to challenge the incumbent government as the PDP's flagbearer.
During an interview on Arise News, Gana conveyed strong confidence that Obi would outperform any competitor in Nigeria's northern states if he ran as a candidate for the PDP.
Obi stated that he remains a member of the Labour Party and has pledged to stay with them for now while collaborating with the coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In May 2022, he departed from the PDP to pursue his candidacy with the LP.
The PDP has a strong presence in the region. As someone who studies public opinion, I can say that Peter Obi, representing the PDP in the northern states, would likely surpass any opponent because of our community's commitment to fairness and justice.
We are reaching out to Peter Obi as part of our search efforts. Although he is talented, we believe there might be an even better fit among the many brilliant individuals being considered. Therefore, our search continues.
"In 2023, we made an error. If I were Atiku, I'd say to Peter, 'It's your turn now; I'll offer you the vice-presidency,' but he chose not to," he remarked.
Weighing in on the discussion on Thursday, Jacob Mark, a former National Legal Adviser of the PDP, stated that the former governor of Anambra is welcome to return to the party if he chooses.
He emphasized that the PDP is Obi's best chance to win the 2027 presidential election.
