U.S. President Donald Trump has declared a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from India, scheduled to be implemented this Friday.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed concern over India’s expanding military and energy collaboration with Russia, describing it as an issue for the U.S.
national interests. Although he recognized India as a "friend," he accused the country of participating in unfair trade practices that negatively impact American businesses.
He described India's trade barriers as "strenuous and obnoxious," stating that they effectively keep the markets closed to companies. Additionally, he remarked that its tariffs are "excessively high."
Trump also criticized India's ties with Russia, stating: "India has consistently sourced most of its military equipment from Russia and remains one of the largest purchasers of Russian energy, alongside China."
Besides the new tariff, Trump mentioned that India would incur a financial "penalty" for its transactions with Russia, though he did not elaborate on what this penalty might entail.
