On Tuesday, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, stated that the Federal Government is committed to preventing industrial action in the education sector.
Alausa, appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s "Politics Today," stated that President Bola Tinubu has instructed his team to prevent the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other bodies within tertiary institutions nationwide from going on strike.
"The President has issued instructions to ensure that ASUU and other tertiary institution trade unions will not engage in strikes again in this country," he stated on the current affairs show.
The minister stated that the government holds regular meetings with ASUU, COEASU, NASU, and SSANU.
"It's simply not encouraging at the moment, as there's a significant need for relationship building. Nevertheless, the government is fulfilling its obligations with these unions."
He stated, "That's what past governments have been missing. They meet with these unions, who are very good people, but over the years, the government has consistently failed to uphold those agreements."
Alausa also dismissed rumors about an impending strike in higher education institutions.
Regarding the reforms undertaken by the Federal Government, he mentioned that these efforts are starting to show positive outcomes, as several public Nigerian universities have achieved global rankings.
Alausa's remarks follow closely after the Yobe State University branch of ASUU ended its strike, which began on July 11, 2025.
Ahmed Karage, the branch chairman, announced that the association has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Yobe State Government to tackle the remaining demands.
"The statement includes that the ASUU president has approved ending the strike action following the MoU."
The branch chairman urged the members to return to work immediately.
