The Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, has successfully negotiated with Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to lower the rehabilitation cost of Lagos's fire-damaged Iddo Bridge from N27 billion to N17 billion.
During a site visit to the bridge on Friday, Minister of Works Dave Umahi shared updates on the project's status.
Julius Berger initially quoted approximately N27 billion; however, following extensive negotiation and discussion, we settled on N17 billion," Umahi informed reporters.
He commended the construction company for its teamwork-focused approach, highlighting a change in mindset under its new leadership.
The minister referred to the company as a "revitalized Berger," noting that the cost reduction was achieved thanks to the transparency and cooperative spirit of its new managing director.
Umahi stressed that the Ministry of Works is focusing on transparency and cost efficiency, highlighting that contractors are required to strictly follow the ministry's guidelines.
The project, initially planned as a simple repair job, has now been expanded to a more comprehensive endeavor because of the extent of the damage.
The minister expressed concern about the worsening condition of the bridge, blaming its decline on long-term neglect, misuse, and unauthorized occupants living underneath it.
He stated that the fire, which damaged three spans of the bridge, was sparked by illegal settlers who had built makeshift dwellings and were handling flammable materials in the vicinity.
"They introduced chemicals, constructed block walls, and established homes. Subsequently, they started a fire that burned the bridge and damaged three spans. Now we are going to fully repair the bridge," Umahi explained.
He mentioned that the bridge's clearance, which is presently around 4.5 meters, has been affected by frequent collisions with large vehicles and illicit activities underneath it. Moving forward, the ministry intends to raise the clearance height to no less than 5.6 meters.
Umahi guaranteed that the Federal Ministry of Works is dedicated to completely restoring the bridge in order to ensure public safety and prevent any future incidents.
Regarding the issue of displaced individuals, he made it clear that the area under the bridge will no longer be used as shelter.
"As long as I serve as the Minister of Works, no one will reside under Iddo Bridge."
"The well-being of the people takes precedence," he stated.
