Reports indicate that final-year students of Gyutiev Model College in Saghev Ward, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, have allegedly set the principal's residence on fire.
The incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday, June 27, 2025, was sparked by accusations that the principal, Mr. Isaac Yina, failed to register 178 students for the 2025 National Examinations Council (NECO) examination, despite allegedly collecting N85,000 from each student for registration.
This means a total of over N15 million was reportedly paid by these students for the examination.
The students' outrage intensified upon discovering they were not registered for the crucial exam, which is a prerequisite for tertiary education in Nigeria, thereby jeopardizing their academic futures.
As of now, there has been no official statement from the Benue State Ministry of Education, the police, or school authorities to confirm the development.
Efforts to reach the principal or school officials for comments have been unsuccessful.
Such acts of arson in schools in Nigeria are considered serious criminal offenses with severe consequences for those involved, including arrest, prosecution, and potential imprisonment.
Beyond legal repercussions, the incident also disrupts the education of other students and damages the school's reputation.
