The ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) In Morocco is filled with talents.
However, one name continues to rise above the rest — Ijeoma Esther Okoronkwo.
As per Lamar University official website, Esther was born in Abia State, Nigeria, and raised in Richmond, Texas, United States.
Esther’s journey to becoming a Super Falcons standout is a tale of perseverance, passion, and purpose.
The 28-year-old attacking midfielder has been instrumental in Nigeria’s impressive run at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
With four assists — the highest by any player in the competition — and a goal to her name, Okoronkwo has become the creative heartbeat of the Super Falcons’ attacking unit.
Okoronkwo began her football journey in the United States, where she attended John and Randolph Foster High School and later played college soccer at Northeast Texas Community College and Lamar University.
During her time at Lamar, she received several accolades for her outstanding performances. This showcased the early signs of a player destined for greatness.
Her professional career took off in France with AS Saint-Étienne, where she made her mark before transferring to Spain’s UD Tenerife in the prestigious Liga F in June 2023.
Just two years later, in February 2025, she made another significant move — this time to Canada — signing with AFC Toronto in the Northern Super League.

According to a report by ESPN Africa on Saturday, three years ago, Okoronkwo’s life took a dramatic turn.
While working at a restaurant in Florida, she received a surprise call from then-Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum, inviting her to represent Nigeria.
It was a dream come true — one that launched her into the international spotlight.
Since then, she has grown from strength to strength, and today, she’s become a key figure in Nigeria’s bid for continental glory.
A Standout At 2024 WAFCON:
Alongside the resolute defending of Ashleigh Plumptre, Okoronkwo’s creativity and flair have stood out.
Her ability to manoeuvre through tight spaces, her quick footwork, and her unmatched delivery on set pieces have made her a nightmare for opposing defences.
“She is still developing. She has not got to where we know she can get to. She is a great player and has a lot of potential,” said Super Falcons' coach Justine Madugu.
With every match, she inches closer to becoming not just a Super Falcons star, but a household name in women’s football globally.
