The High Court in Ilorin, Kwara State has sentenced Abdulrahman Bello to death by hanging for the murder of Hafsoh Lawal, a final-year student at the College of Education, Ilorin.
Delivering her judgment on Thursday, Justice Hannah Ajayi acquitted four other defendants and absolved them of any wrongdoing.
Faced with five charges, the judge began by exonerating four of the defendants—Ahmed Abdulwasiu, Jamiu Uthman, Suleiman Muyideen, and Abdulrahman Jamiu—from any involvement in the death of Hafsoh Lawal. Consequently, they were released from all accusations related to this case.
In delivering the judgment for the primary offender, Abdulrahman Bello, Justice Hannah Ahayi characterized Hafsoh's murder as cruel and wicked, highlighting it as an extreme demonstration of human malevolence.
She stated that all the evidence indicated Hafsoh was killed for use in money rituals and trade in human organs.
The judge noted that his professed love and marriage proposal were fabricated lies designed to lure her to his home with the intent of killing her.
She subsequently sentenced Abdulrahman Bello to death by hanging, while acquitting the other four suspects.
The crime reportedly took place on February 10, 2025, in the Olunlade area of Ilorin. It is alleged that Abdulrahman Bello invited his girlfriend to his room where he murdered her and mutilated her body following an intimate encounter.
After being arrested and questioned, the authorities discovered in Bello's room the palm of the deceased along with a bottle filled with blood and some personal effects belonging to the dead. Additionally, they found a cutlass that had been used to dismember the body of the deceased.
Other remains of her decomposed body were subsequently discovered at a nearby dumpsite in Ilorin.
