Just moments before the explosion, a bustling seaside cafe in Gaza City was filled with artists, students, and athletes among others.
Gathered around tables, patrons at al-Baqa Cafeteria were busy scrolling through their phones, enjoying hot beverages, and chatting with friends. At one moment, the well-known tune of "Happy Birthday" filled the air as a young child celebrated amidst family members.
According to sources cited by the BBC, a Hamas operative wearing civilian attire came to his table in a secluded area of the cafe with a view of the sea.
Without any warning, Israeli forces dropped a bomb that tore through the building, they said.
When the explosion occurred, those nearby rushed onto the streets and into al-Baqa, desperately searching for survivors.
"The scene was horrifying, with bodies and blood everywhere, accompanied by screams," one man recounted to the BBC later that day.
"It was complete devastation," said another. "A heartbreaking tragedy occurred at al-Baqa Cafeteria."
