An Enugu Magistrate Court has ordered three individuals to remain in custody after they were accused of assaulting and injuring members of the public during the Oriokpa Masquerade celebration.
The accused individuals, Emeka Eze (33), Omeke Uchechukwu (22), and Malachi Nnaemeka (30), were arrested on Tuesday by officers from the state police command.
They are currently facing charges on three counts: conspiracy, extortion by intimidation, and causing grievous bodily harm.
The police claim that during the Oriokpa Masquerade celebrations, the trio assaulted members of the public, resulting in multiple injuries.
In a statement released on Saturday, the command's spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, announced that the case has been rescheduled to July 31, 2025 for further proceedings.
Ndukwe stated that the Police Commissioner has instructed a heightened effort to capture the remaining members of the masquerade group who are still on the run.
A video that went viral, recorded on June 22 along Aku Road in Nsukka, showed masqueraders attacking local residents. Authorities later verified that a man had to be hospitalized as a result of the injuries he sustained during the incident.
"The three suspects were later identified and arrested with the help of law-abiding community members, while others managed to flee," Ndukwe stated.
