Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reacted to reports that a Nigerian-owned supertanker was seized by United States authorities over alleged crude oil theft and illegal activities.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi described the incident as disturbing and called it a serious warning to Nigeria. He said the development shows a deeper problem that continues to damage the country’s economy, image and future.
Obi said he has, over the years, warned that Nigeria is losing billions of dollars to crude oil theft because of weak institutions, poor accountability and lack of punishment for those involved. According to him, when the country’s resources are stolen, ordinary Nigerians suffer through poor schools, weak healthcare, rising insecurity and increased poverty.
He called for a proper and thorough investigation into the seized supertanker to uncover the truth and bring everyone involved to justice.
The former Anambra State governor stressed that crude oil theft cannot be carried out by ordinary citizens alone, noting that powerful individuals and criminal networks are behind it. He urged the government to strengthen maritime security, reform regulatory agencies, and ensure transparent tracking of Nigeria’s oil production.
Obi also said Nigeria must rebuild its global image by showing commitment to honesty, good governance and the rule of law. He added that the country cannot attract investors if it continues to be linked with corruption and theft.
He called on Nigerian authorities to work closely with international partners to fully investigate the matter and ensure justice is served without favoritism.
