Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, stated that in 2022, Nigeria found itself at a perilous junction due to numerous crises jeopardizing its unity, stability, and future. This situation persisted until President Bola Tinubu took office in 2023.
While speaking in Abuja at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Nigerian Defence Academy’s 18 Regular Course, Ribadu characterized the situation as dire, noting that security threats are pervasive across all regions of the country.
He noted that the challenges were widespread across the country—from the insurgency-stricken North East and violence-afflicted North West to the turbulent Niger Delta and separatist movements in the South East.
The NSA reiterated the Tinubu administration's dedication to addressing what he described as "inherited, intractable security challenges."
He stated that significant progress has been achieved in enhancing security and rebuilding national confidence throughout the country.
He revealed that the government's counterinsurgency measures have resulted in the neutralization of over 13,500 terrorists and criminals. Additionally, more than 124,000 Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters, along with their families, have surrendered.
Ribadu also proposed actively involving military veterans in the current battle against insecurity, highlighting the importance of their experience and expertise in tackling complex threats.
In his address at the event, retired Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika, who served as the 22nd Chief of Army Staff, advocated for mandatory comprehensive military training for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He proposed this initiative as a strategic measure to enhance efforts against insurgency and other security challenges.
