During a strategic patrol mission on Wednesday in Benue State, troops involved in Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) successfully apprehended two armed suspects.
The suspects were apprehended along main entry routes into Makurdi, the state capital, during a security operation aimed at addressing increasing criminal activity in the region.
The two men detained are 42-year-old farmer Mr. F. Agbako from Gwer East Local Government Area and Mr. Tsee Kyaan, also 42 years old, a driver hailing from Makurdi LGA. Their detention is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle unauthorized checkpoints and control the movement of armed individuals within the troops' operational jurisdiction.
During a stop-and-search operation, authorities discovered an AK-47 rifle along with a loaded magazine of 7.62mm special ammunition hidden inside a blue Toyota Camry, registered under the number Lagos FST 733 GL.
The mission was led by Captain Miri-Dashe of the 401 Special Forces Brigade, with assistance from Captain Iyamba. The well-coordinated operation also involved personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS), Keystone operatives, and members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Authorities have confirmed that both the suspects and the recovered weapon and ammunition are in custody as investigations proceed. Legal proceedings will follow according to directives from relevant security agencies.
In response to the development, Major General Moses Kolo Gara, Force Commander of OPWS, commended the team's efficiency and discipline throughout the operation.
He stated that the operation's steadfast dedication to eliminating criminal elements and ensuring the safety of communities throughout Benue and beyond continues to be a top priority.
Major General Gara also recognized the efforts of senior military leaders, expressing his gratitude "to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, for their ongoing support and provision of essential resources that enable OPWS to accomplish its mission."
