Five Kenyan security officers have been killed after their patrol came under attack from suspected Al-Shabaab fighters in Mandera County, near the Somalia border.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, around midday near Wantey Dam in Lafey Sub-County, approximately six kilometres from the Special Operations Group camp at Alungu.
According to police reports, four of the officers killed were members of the Special Operations Group, while the fifth victim was a National Police Reservist.
A reinforcement team deployed to the area after the attack was later targeted by an improvised explosive device (IED). The explosion destroyed an armoured vehicle, though authorities confirmed that no additional casualties were recorded.
Security forces have since launched an operation to track down the attackers. Al-Shabaab, the Somalia-based militant group that has carried out several attacks in northeastern Kenya, has not claimed responsibility for the incident.
The group has repeatedly targeted security personnel and civilians, especially in areas along the Kenya-Somalia border, raising continued security concerns in the region.
